Giải thích VN: WINS chạy trên các mạng có cơ sở là Windows NT Server. Đây là một dịch vụ quản lý cơ sở dữ liệu các ánh xạ tên của máy tính thành địa chỉ IP để các tên máy tính NetBIOS được dùng trong môi trường mạng của Windows có thể được ánh xạ thành các địa chỉ IP khi mạng đang xét có nền tảng là IP. Khi người dùng cần truy xuất đến máy tính nào đó, thì tên NetBIOS sẽ được tham chiếu đến, và sau đó tên này được chuyển tới WINS server gần nhất, sau đó server này sẽ trả về một địa chỉ IP. Theo các quản trị viên, WINS hầu như hoàn toàn tự động. WINS thường xuyên xây dựng cơ sở dữ liệu riêng và tự động cập nhật.
