    Giải thích VN: Trên mạng, đây là sự tranh chấp giữa các trạm để có cơ hội dùng một tuyến truyền thông hoặc tài nguyên mạng. Theo một nghĩa nào đó, tình trạng tranh chấp mô tả một tình huống ở đó hai hay nhiều thiết bị cố truyền cùng một lúc, do đó gây ra đụng chạm trên tuyến. Theo một nghĩa hơi khác, sự tranh chấp cũng mô tả phương pháp thả lỏng ( free-for-all) điều khiển truy cập một tuyến truyền thông, ở đó quyền truyền được giao cho trạm nào giành được quyền điều khiển tuyến. Trong kiểu tranh chấp này, mỗi trạm lắng chờ tuyến và đợi cho nó không còn hoạt động. Khi tuyến đã rãnh, bất kỳ trạm nào muốn truyền đều phải đăng thầu tuyến bằng cách phát một thông báo yêu cầu gửi ( request-to-send) cho trạm nhận của mình. Nếu lời đáp là dương, trạm sẽ được tự do truyền, và mọi mắt nối khác phải đợi cho đến khi tuyến rãnh trở lại thì mới truyền được. Với tính năng tranh chấp, các trạm không truyền theo một thứ tự nhất định nào cả, hoặc không cần dùng một tín hiệu đặc biệt (thẻ bài = token) để xác định trạm nào hiện đang có quyền dùng tuyến.
